Elkhart, IN proved to be an ideal rest stop en route to my first stay in Cleveland. In an effort to escape the NATO summit, it took two full hours in an un-air-conditioned sedan to get past the Chicago Skyway that overlooks scenic Hammond, IN. As such, Elkhart was as far as I could make it before needing a toilet and a refreshing specialty coffee beverage. Aside from asking if I wanted whipped cream on my grande coffee frappuccino (silly, the plain coffee ones don’t ever get whip), legendary service with a smile with a side of fries and stuffed crust pizza to boot from the neighboring Burger King and Pizza Hut (I kid, I kid).

This is, by far my favorite and most memorable Starbucks experience around the world. We booked a private tour guide and at the end of the day when he asked if there was anything else we wanted to see I spoke up with giddy: “Oh yes! Starbucks!” Having just visited ancient ruins and traditional rug making communes, his reply was an almost aghast, “You want to go to Starbucks!?!”
Insert extreme American tourist embarrassment here.
But, paying in turkish lira for a mango passion fruit frappuchino and a mug, genuine fake bag in hand containing a genuine genuine Turkish rug….. unrepeatable (assumedly), and fantastic. Big thumb’s up.

Fortunately, there was enough time during our layover in the nation’s capital on the way to Rome to grab a frosty java chip Frappuchino, a mug, and a snapshot. I never drink Frappuchinos, but it seemed like the right thing to do before embarking on a 10 hour flight in a 2 x 3 x 5 ft cube. What you DON’T see is that to the right of the storefront was a life-sized cardboad cutout of Barack Obama. Thumb’s up!
