In truth, this was not a very good Starbucks.  It took a really, really long time to get my beverage and wasn’t clean.  However, I have to appreciate the truly charming atmosphere of Burlingame Avenue and gaggles of hip California college students studying inside. Plus, I desperately needed to pee.  This photo is a bittersweet moment after having lunch with my Aunt Barbara, who I hadn’t seen in about 15 years, and before traveling to the airport for the return flight to Chicago.  Way to deliver on the ‘Bucks, California.

After a seriously intense day of 95-plus degree wine tastings through beautiful Sonoma County with my family, I can think of nothing more refreshing than the shaded awning of a Starbucks store and an iced coffee in my personal mug.  Admittedly tipsy and overheated, this is a day that’s slightly blurry, but certainly not forgotten.

First hit in the state of my birth.  Thankfully, my Mother and Step-father (travel companions on this quick trip to California for my Grandparents’ 75th birthday(s) party) are hungry on the way to Hidden Valley Lake, because their fortuitous stop at a Burger King afforded me this shot of the Starbucks store next door.  I think it was a refreshing iced coffee, just what the doctor ordered for a long car ride through sunny central California.

Having to stave off international touring for awhile to finish out Grad school, here begins a stint of Starbucks’ American style… primarily located adjacent to major highways and serving as a place for a quality cup and a clean place to pee.  Sheboygan, Wisconsin did not disappoint on both accounts when we visited this store on our way to Door County, WI for an off-season winter getaway.  I think it was a plain coffee and a bag of trail mix, and the service was fantastic.

I’m leaving this photo obnoxiously big on purpose, for through a series of unfortunate events, this is the one and only picture of our magical day on the island of Crete.  In all of my genius, I deleted all the photos of Crete by accident about a week after returning from the Mediterranean cruise.  Of course, the first thing I did after getting home from the cruise was upload the Sbux series to Facebook, so this is the only evidence I have of being there.

The day itself, was truly awesome.  Heraklion was nearly deserted due to an obscure Saint’s birthday (that, apparently, is not obscure in Crete and gives everyone the day off).  This, our last port of call on our cruise, was a bittersweet end to an amazing international journey.  I didn’t buy anything at this Starbucks; I merely posed in front of it, since I was completely full of espresso and fried cheese from the cafe across the plaza.

This is, by far my favorite and most memorable Starbucks experience around the world.  We booked a private tour guide and at the end of the day when he asked if there was anything else we wanted to see I spoke up with giddy: “Oh yes! Starbucks!”  Having just visited ancient ruins and traditional rug making communes, his reply was an almost aghast, “You want to go to Starbucks!?!”

Insert extreme American tourist embarrassment here.

But, paying in turkish lira for a mango passion fruit frappuchino and a mug, genuine fake bag in hand containing a genuine genuine Turkish rug….. unrepeatable (assumedly), and fantastic.  Big thumb’s up.

Truth be told, this was obviously a drive-by in the port city of Pireus on the way to Athens… but, Wow!  Starbucks in Greece!!!

Most of our one day in Greece was spent on a tour bus, and the time that wasn’t was in the historic Plaka surrounding the Parthenon in Athens.  So while it’s disappointing to not have a high quality Starbucks photo with me drinking an olive oil latte, I’m secretly relieved that there are no Starbucks in the historic center of the city of Athens.
